Even David Blaine Can't Hold His Breath for Nine Days

It's slower than the last nine days before a dream vacation, or the last nine days of a horrible job, the last nine days of the school year. It's worse than waiting for the results of an important medical test, for an acceptance letter into the school of your choice. You're up for an Academy Award, but it's nine days until the ceremony. You're ready to have the baby, but it's nine days until the due date.

I'm talking about the final nine days of the U.S. presidential campaign. Here in Washington DC it feels like everything is on hold until November 4. Everything. Every damn thing.

One way to pass the time is to go here. Turn up the speakers on your computer and click on everything in the room. Click more than once. It's a mindless way to amuse yourself for a few minutes while you wait, as we in DC wait - and wait - and WAIT - for election day.

Any other suggestions as to how to get through the next nine days? Please?

Nothing to worry about. Pretend the election is in three months and none days will fly by.

I wish you were scrying with the leaves...then you could tell us how it all turns out. My stomach gets knotted, but you know if anything hinky happens (OH, the polls were wrong etc.), it won't be let go this time, because this candidate is so far ahead ahead of where the others were in the polls at this time. I also think for things to be altered at any higher level, there'd have to be some kind of consensus...and there doesn't seem to be (Republicans deserting in droves). But, maybe you should get out of town for a day and hang with the trees.

I'm petrified, pure and simple. I don't listen to polls. McCain was on with Brokaw this a.m., and was truly doddering. Frightening.

Hey Reya,
We're holding our breath down south too.

Bored? Watch this for a start. Even funnier if you remember the original ad.

When the waiting game begins I try to keep things as normal as possible and focus on my day. It seems that I can appreciate things more when I am waiting on news because every day/night feels so important. The next day can bring such life changing news that I choose to cherish the moment. It's all so heightened.

That said...I'll be happy when the waiting is over.

I think the whole world is holding its breath on this one. Even over here in the UK, there is huge interest. I can only imagine what it must be like in the hub of it all, DC.

Photograph it, Reya! Document it all. Looking back to the history- making years in SA, when Mandela was released from prison, when we had our first ever democratic elections, I have so many memories, but I have nothing tangible from that time - no photos, not even diary entries. I remember being so busy with my life, knowing i was living through world-changing times but can barely remember what I was actually doing.
Yeah, we're saying our prayers here too.

I'm going to vote tomorrow, Tuesday, and then hole up with my dogs and a couple bottles of wine and just wait it through..I'm a 69 year old white woman who plans to wear my Obama tee shirt to vote, just to show some of these pollsters that not all southerners are as dumb as they think..

As for me, I'm a-headin' out to my nice, new Columbia Heights neighborhood Target store and see if they stock these things called "medically induced comas" -- That'll do the trick.

Gary is right -- I'm just trying to live my life, day to day, and not metabolize more of the election furor than I need to be informed. (I've already made my choice, after all!)
