As if in shamanic alignment with the secular new year, winter blew cold and sharp into Washington DC last night. Oh man is it cold!

Of course it's high time for winter to arrive. We had temperatures up into the 60s all the way through New Year's Day. I'm not complaining, simply noticing how different 2012 feels from the beneficent, wonderful 2011.

I know - everybody had a bad year - except me, apparently. My sister was saying the other day that even the "good" things in 2011 were hard-won, destructive or appalling - such as the pics of Gaddafi's body in a meat locker at a shopping center. Yeah.

Good point, but 2011 was one of the best years of my life. I took a few dips but only for short moments. I'm feeling a bit wistful that its over, I admit.

I remember the years under Clinton when the U.S. was happy and prosperous. We had a huge national surplus, for instance - hard to imagine after the many disasters of the Bush years. When Clinton was president, those were the good old days - except for me. I struggled through the 90s in every way you can imagine: financially, emotionally, spiritually and physically.

Am I really that much of a contrarian? If so, bloody hell. Should I wish for another year like 2011? You tell me!

Who knows what it will bring? But I do hope it is again a good one for you. Really really good. And if bad things happen to any of us, that they may be transformed.

I am glad it was a good year for you. It was a fair year for myself, many lovely beginnings and happenings. However some difficult endings and sorrows.
I am looking forward to this new year. And utilizing the skills I have achieved from 2011.

Janis - keep breathing. X

I consider you more of a contralto than a contrarian, Reya :-) But if you are a contrarian, then 2012 might be another great year, as I see only deadlock, infighting, and endless posturing in Washington city. On the other hand, I'm wrong a lot of the time. You are an incredibly imaginative photographer, but you outdid yourself today...gorgeous images!

reya - 20111 was really awesome for me. add me to your shortlist of people who had years they loved and were loved by!!! it's freaking cold here - minus 20 celsius not even bothering with the windchill. my closest friend is skiing in quebec right now - minus thirty without the windchill of racing down a mountainside. who are these people? why are like this? steven

Steven - stay warm! You're not riding your bike in this, are you? Holy cow.

Awww Michael I love being a contralto. Thanks.

I struggled personally through the '90s, but I still look back on them with fondness!

the decades seem to get easier the older we get (if we're lucky!) but i'd say it's tough being young these days, getting started...my kids are having a rough time of it and I think it's only going to get worse. ugh, how defeatist of me

Tom they will prevail!

Steve, I learned a hell of a lot during the 90s, but I don't miss them!
