Shamrocks and Green Beer? Or not ...

My mother was a contrarian, she was. For instance, she always wore orange on St. Patrick's Day, something that I of course did not understand at the time, nor, come to think of it do I understand today. Protestants wear orange in Ireland, not here, but I'm pretty sure my mother had nothing against the Catholics, so why did she do it? Maybe it had to do with the myth about Patrick driving the snakes, a.k.a. pagans, out of Ireland. Or maybe it was something political. I have no idea and since my mother is long gone from this earth, I guess I'll never know.

Does anyone still drink green beer on St. Pat's day? I know there are parades in NY and other cities. Is it still a day when you're "supposed" to get drunk? I am so out of the mainstream; I don't have a clue.

Which is why I haven't decided yet whether I'll purposely wear green today. Can't imagine anyone is going to pinch me if I don't. But I won't wear orange, no matter what my mother's reasons were for doing it. That's just rude.

However you celebrate today or even if you don't, CHEERS, y'all! Cheers!

I wear green on St. Pat's day (if I remember) because I can always stand to shake up my wardrobe LOL. And I like being part of a celebration, but I don't like beer, so this is my contribution. In Cincinnati (a beer kind of city anyway) there will definitely be green beer flowing freely. I'll abstain, courteously.

the town i live in was mostly settled by irish people so there's a bit of a rumpus on st. patrick's day. i'm english by birth with one side that has some roots somewhere in ireland but i don't celebrate st. patrick's day. nope. i find it funny that non-irish people celebrate the patron saint of a country they have no connection to. what about all the other saints?! they've gotta be kicking themselves for not having been more outgoing and setting a good tone for their own days!! steven

I usually don't even realize it the day until half way through. today I am wearing green though, but not by design. It just happens to be my new favorite shirt.

Ah the poor long suffering saints! Even now they have to suffer.

Aren't there saints for every day of the year? Or am I just making that up. If so, we should celebrate every day! Why not?

Carpe diem, y'all!

All the sports bars in Albuquerque will be pouring green beer this evening, and the Tipsy Tow people will be on call. Which is why, when I said, "Why don't we spend my birthday money at Macaroni Grill on Wednesday?" my sister said, "You kidding? On St. Patrick's day?" Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten. So we're doing an early dinner at 4:00 so we miss all that. It should work.

I love those shouting crocuses. Maybe you should wear purple. :)

I just wear clothes on St. Patrick's day, whatever colour they may be.
March 17 has always seemed more about pubs & green beer here than celebration of a Saint.

Love to go to our Irish Pub on St. Paddy's day for the music and the comraderie and the out and out craziness with a brogue...Love the festivities- St. Paddy is a myth, Ireland is far away but this invented hoiday is a lot of fun- I may even get a kiss!
My Mom wore orange, too. must have been generational- not so much anti catholic as NOT catholic...

It occurred to me that at least in my corner of the world, St. Pat's day is a celebration of spring.

I can't decide if the English attitude to St. Patrick's day is hostility or apathy . . . but it's mostly apathetic, I think.

I made roast lamb, mashed potatoes, cabbage and hot cross buns with Irish stout to "honor" the day.

Maybe she just liked to wear orange when everyone else wore green. I ended up not wearing green. Just didn't get it together. Haven't been pinched yet.

My boss, who is of Irish protestant extraction, always wore orange on St. Patty's day. Like you, I always found that somewhat unnecessarily provocative and "rude." But I guess she felt she was merely expressing her own Irish heritage.

By the way, I wore green, but only accidentally. I didn't even realize it was St. Patrick's Day until about noon!

Cheers! I, like many of my students, did wear green today. I even had a 'kiss me I'm Irish' tie on which was a big hit with the little ones and made me a total geek with the big ones. Haha. And I can tell you from walking down Third Avenue this afternoon that yes indeed it is still a reason to get drunk, wear green, hang out of bar windows, be loud and act silly. I can't wait to escape NYC on St. Patrick's Day. It can get ugly.

Happy Spring.

Happy St Pat's to you Reya! I wore green yesterday, forgetting that I should have saved it for today. But it was a nice day anyway, that it was.

I looked through my closet and discovered I had nothing green to wear.

Whew.

Saved me from having to make a fashion decision.

I'm pretty sure I had nothing orange either.

I had a bottled Mojito in honor of the little-known multicultural roots of St. Patrick's Day. Yup. St. Patrick hung out in Parrot Bay for several years, and he and Captain Morgan were pretty tight. In fact, it was actually Captain Morgan that brought him to Ireland in the first place.
