Snow Cone

I love snow so much, but I must admit that last night's thundersnow, while beautiful and extremely dramatic, did not deliver the kind of snow I romanticize about. It's not light or fluffy, or slightly damp - containing just enough moisture to make snow sculpture a pleasure. No. This snow is a slushy, icy, heavy, yucky snow that snapped off tree branches, brought down power lines, and snarled traffic far more than some other kind of snow.

Counting my blessings: I don't own a car and I don't have to drive anywhere today. I live in a neighborhood with underground power lines, so I never lost power (400,000 + are without power this morning). Knowing that the snow was coming, I got to the supermarket on Tuesday, so I'm well stocked with whatever I might need (not that we're snowed in here on Capitol Hill, but still, it's nice not to have to run errands).

Yesterday afternoon I baked a nice little fruit-topped cake. Should anyone drop by for a cup of coffee, I'll be able to also provide them with a slice of cake. Yep, all is well at the chateau in the wake of the thundersnow, and I am grateful!

I think the picture is nicer than the reality...

thundersnow - love it!

we are having a bit of that romantic snow right now....wish you were here. although word has it that it might not really amount to a whole lot.

I had two friends without power last night, and one of them had just driven home from work in 4.5 hours time...only to come home to darkness and cold. The snow was thwopping on my roof so hard, I feared the roof would collapse. It was...unnerving. My own little power losses had me spending over an hour to restore my printer as functional...some disruption between that and the CPU.

Your little haven sounds like a warm nest of comfort.

the best part of snow is not having to go out in it!

Cube, come over and have some cake. You, too Liza.

Kim I really DO wish I were there.

The sun is coming out now; my guess is that a lot of this snow cone slush will evaporate today.

These pictures of yours are magical! And with a cake with fruit, you're set for a while, with or without power.
Be safe.

Had any takers yet? I am worried that my friend Margaret might not have been able to make it home on Wednesday -- she was flying into DC from Seattle.

These images are MAGICAL. They belong as illustrations in a storybook. WOW. GREAT capture!

So glad you're okay. The news reports have been fantastical. If this is January, what will February bring???

Maybe the weather gods are getting it all out of their systems this month. Who knows?

DELICIOUS!

Cut me an extra wide piece, please!

Reya, from what I hear the weather gods are not done with us yet!

Love the pics! I've only experienced thundersnow once. Very eerie to have lightning and thunder and snow all at the same time.

All we got this time was about 8 inches, maybe a little more ...

reya where i live, each night a couple of centimetres fall and there's a soft whiteness all over again and i so very like that. i love the little bench in your photograph - there's space for a small fire and blankets to sit on and throw over your heads - definitely a good space for stories! steven

Perfect photo up top. Baking is excellent when the weather turns cold. Best desserts ever can be found at joyofbaking.com. The recipes there work!

I'm a big fan of Deborah Madison. It is from her book that I got the fruit topped cake recipe. SO delicious!

Cake with you in Washington DC? Woe. That would be a hoot. With a perfect cappucino...how would we do that? We'd have to take the cake with us. To Peregrines? How are their cappucino's by the way?

We've been having an unusually mild winter here in Springfield if we consider previous years. I know what you mean about icy snow breaking tree limbs. We've had terrible luck in recent years with ice and I just ache to see a tree bent over. It just calls out to us, "someone help me, this hurts."

Can't wait to get back together. Hope your feeling a thousand percent better. xoxoxo

I like it when it snows and I feel cozy. Nice.

When I read about the power outages in DC I wondered if you were affected, so I am glad to read that you survived it in style! The snow that you describe here is similar to the kind of snow that occurs here when it decides to honor us with its presence.
