Trekkie

Today night and day are perfectly balanced, not just here in Washington DC, but everywhere from the north pole to the south pole. My friends in Jozi, Tanzania, Botswana, those who live in Toronto, London, in the French countryside, British Columbia, Hooterville, California, my friend who is in Brasil right now - we are all experiencing the same day today, the same night.

It's kind of miraculous since this planet tends towards extremes in many ways, and enjoys crazy diversity in terms of landscape, animals and plants, people, and weather of course. Today everyone has at least one thing in common. If there was ever a day to join hands and sing Kumbaya, equinox is the time.

I said that as if it was a joke, but I'm serious. My prayers this morning included many requests for compassion, open minds, and for all of us everywhere to remember, if possible, that we have far more in common than we think.

One of the jolly young guys riding the Bolt bus told me he loves Star Trek because it portrays the future of the earth as completely positive. A few hundred years in the future, according to the people who wrote for the show, the earth is governed as one entity, no one is hungry, no one is poor. Diplomacy among other worlds, learning, and skillful expression of the arts become homo sapiens's top priorities. Sounds good to me! Maybe that's why I love Star Trek so much.

Today is equinox, the dark and light are absolutely equal partners today. I'm holding in my head a picture of the world of Star Trek, imagining you with some crazy hairdo and funny outfit, smiling. Every one of you, smiling.

Happy Equinox!!

Hi. Your blog is so beautiful. Great pictures and wonderful writing. I have a question about the size of your blog photos. When I post with photos, the photos display smaller than I would like (I would rather have the same size as yours). I can't figure out how to do that. Can you help? Thank you and Happy Equinox! - Kimberly and Eric (Shade Tree Yoga)

Hey Kimberly - I use photobucket.com to store my photos, then use their code to place the pics in the blogpost. I have to size them before I put them in photobucket, otherwise they take over the whole page which is dramatic but not practical.

Happy equinox and thanks!

Happy equinox indeed.
Yes, it is a nice balanced sort of day.
Peaceful and lovely.
Yes, your photos are lovely. Sometimes, if I get the time, I play with mine on picnik.

A world without hunger would be wonderful.
My men folk send love!

Happy Equinox and a balanced, optimistic day to you! and thanks for the reminder. I've been so buried; it's good to come up for air and remember there's a whole beautiful planet out there.

I think a collective calm down is in order. My best to you, because you are simply the best.

I don't mind being a trekkie - but no red shirt please!

Great post, Reya. I just realized why I always liked Star Trek so much. A world that is equal would be wonderful, wouldn't it? Just like the equinox.

Balance. Yes, that's the key. Along with lots of blue skies alternating with the rainy days. And noticing reflections.

That leaf on the shiny red surface is awesome!

It's representative of my astonishing ignorance of celestial matters that I didn't know equinox made the day the same length all over the world. That's amazing!

Gene Roddenberry, who created Star Trek, was an eternal optimist about the future of humanity. (At least, as expressed through the show -- maybe he had other views in private?!) That's one reason I love the show as well -- and it definitely had a profound effect on me growing up.

I've never been a Trekkie, but I like the vision it describes! It is good to honor the balanced times, because it does seem like they tip and skew every so easily.

In the straddle we are, in more ways than one. Yesterday it was 87F here - I sat in the sun in shorts and flip-flops for one more day. Today, Mr. North Wind has arrived - down into the 40s tonight. The transition has begun. The best part is, we have you to write (and photograph) it. Thanks, Reya.

it was one degree this morning and it's twenty degrees now but feels like thirty. this morning it was sunny and now it's raining. i left for school in despair and didn't know why. tonight i am joyous and don't know why. none of it really matters so much as a moment today when i told my class that i know we're all so blessed to have this place. the whole of it. blessed also to have the tremendous gift of healing so much of it - a process that started in my view sometime in the early to mid-sixties and is picking up speed and space. thanks for being reya!!!! steven

I've always been a Star Trek fan.

I'm sitting here trying to explain the equinox and solstice to my grandson. He understands but doesn't quite grasp yet, I think.

I'll skip the crazy hairdo and the funny outfit but I'm all for holding hands and smiling

Oh yeah, the red shirt is the mark of a gruesome death before the second commercial break. Oh yeah.

And oh yeah, a collective calm down, Merle. I'm trying to imagine it.

Yes these times are powerful.

Steven, sending soothing warm/cool energy in your direction.

That's something I've always enjoyed about the equinox, that fragile moment before the slow swing to the other extremes...

I've heard Star Trek described as Rotarian...that is, the idea that The United Federation of Planets is just a huge benevolent community association...

I'd never thought about that part of it until the jolly Bolt bus guy said it. But it's true - in Star Trek, earth is a pretty great place to live. Maybe in our next lifetime.
