Dregs of the Old Year

2007 is passing away. I don't know about you, but as far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing. It was a very challenging year for me and in spite of all the wonderful things that came to pass, like getting my Reiki Master degree, finding the Sufi acupuncturist and showing (and selling) my photos, I can't dredge up a single drop of sadness at its passing.

When things get old, it's time for them to move on. Even time itself, measured in secular years, gets stale by the end of the solar month we call December. Some people write lists of the best and worst of the year passing away. I could. I could rant and rave especially about the seventh month of the seventh year of the new millenium, a month that sucked from beginning to end. Or I could wax rhapsodic about all the wonderful things that happened in the past cycle.

I prefer, however, to look forward to 2008. I'll complete my training in Jin Shin this coming year, take a class in memoir writing - sounds fun, eh? I've got two café shows for my photographs lined up for January and February, too. And I have an invitation to spend Thanksgiving in Wales this coming year, something I'm determined to do. Sounds like a great year ahead, yes? Yes.

As for 2007, may you pass away quickly and painlessly and rest in peace. What a year. All the good things, and all the sad things that made up the year are all finished now ... it's almost over. Onwards & upwards!

For me the year boundary never marks a memorable change from one side to the other. In every year I can always tally up a number of good things that happened and a number of things I would prefer not to remember. Most years the good tally is higher than the bad tally, but not always. Life really is just a continuum, for me at least.

Amen! I come not to praise 2007, but to bury it.

See you in '08!

What a beautiful photo-- You did have a lot of good things happen to you in 2007, and 2008 will be a better year. I love looking forward to each new year--quest into the unknown, but 2007 was very very good to me, still, like you, I always prefer to look forward hoping for new adventures.

You know, the "New Year" is such a random idea -- we basically just drew a line and said, "this side is an old year, this side a new one..."

But aside from that, a fresh starting point is indeed nice. :)

Steve is right--I want my new year to start April 1st!

I think that in Iran, the new year does start at spring equinox. In our culture, it's attached to the solstice. For Pagans and Jews, it's fall equinox and for the Chinese it's a certain new moon, fallling somewhere in February. It is and it isn't arbitrary, measuring as it does the circle of the earth around the sun. That actually does mean something.

Today I was remembering good things, like my nephew's wedding in May, the gathering of the Mellickers. That was great! My day in New York in June, when I hung out with Ched, Steve and Gary. Excellent memory!

Walks next to the river, wonderful meals with wonderful friends. It was a great year. Now, 2007, get outta here!!

I am with you - let the old year be done, the past is gone. It is now and it is soon to be, let's embrace what is to come. I wish you all and only the very best of all things for 2008.

2007 was no friend of mine! Be gone with you!

Here's hoping that 2008 will be a better one. Onwards & upwards indeed ...

i don't know that i'll be able to bury the past year that easily Reya - but lots of exciting things in 2008 will help, not least of which (by a long long way) will be meeting you and visiting Washington.

And Wales? in November? Not without coming through and stopping for a while in London, i hope?
