Life is a Sitcom

In front of the waterfall underground at the National Gallery

It has been weeks since it rained here in DC. It's been hot as hell. I've been petitioning the weather gods for rain every day, doing my shamanic rain dance, carrying my rain stick everywhere. I've been begging, imploring, demanding rain. Yesterday I spoke to the clouds. I said, "Can y'all gather yourselves together, give us some rain? C'mon." Perhaps I went too far when I challenged them to rain on me. "Go ahead, DRENCH me, I dare you!" I said out loud, shaking my rain stick at the sky.

That was yesterday afternoon after work. I heard rain during the night, but assumed it would taper off by morning. Ha! Just a few minutes before the guy with the truck arrived to help me move furniture into the new apartment, the skies opened and the rain came down. Occasional showers were predicted, but we got a whole lot more than that. It was/is a good steady, hard rain.

OK.

So my loveseat got soaked (even though we covered it with a tarp). My overstuffed rocker: drenched. Me? Completely sopping wet. Have you ever been so thoroughly doused that your clothes feel like they weigh ten pounds and your shoes make that comical squish squish sound every time you take a step? Think I Love Lucy, oh yeah.

Don't you know those weather gods are having a good laugh at me right now? It is funny, it is. I couldn't stop laughing through the whole process. When will I ever learn the wisdom of Be careful what you wish for ?? Ha ha. Weather Gods: 1, Reya: 0. Again. The joke's on me!

Nancy (of the blog Science Girl) takes her pink bunny Maurice whenever she travels. He seemed very happy to sit with us as we had lunch and traded stories. No, Nancy and I had never met - she lives in France! But as these blogger meet-ups always go, it was easy, comfortable and so much fun.

I've never heard of the waterfall underground. Sounds fun. Sorry about your furniture. Would you please summon your powers and send us rain over here in Phoenix? Love the pink bunny. We do something similar with one of my daughter's childhood puppets and send her the photos. We always have a good laugh with it.

Here's a nice, short youtube vid of the waterfall. The shots from inside the gallery are dark, but I think it reads pretty well.

Oh Reya, you might have waited til the day after you moved to challenge the rain gods. But then they probably would have ignored you. wouldn't have been half so entertaining for them.

Rain seems to be more plentiful here lately, though there is much moisture to make up for! I am thankful though for my rain, and for yours, and your laughter. I think the Gods hear you most when you laugh.
The attached link is to some Native American Rain Dance music that I fell in love with.

Liza thanks for the music! I love music.

Ellen would I ever be so smart as to WAIT to harass the weather gods?? What fun would that be?

Thank you for the rain Reya! My lawn and my garden thank you too. And my children are so happy to be able to play in the cool breeze that the rain left behind. Sorry about your stuff, but thank the rain gods for us all the same. Peace in the moving!

It is so true to be careful what you wish for! And you wished for rain just before moving day? :-)

How nice to have met another blogging pal!

The National Gallery waterfall looks as amazing as all your beautiful photos and descriptions.

Maurice and NanU! How fun!

It rained on your moving day. Laughter is the only option, really.

Bonjour Nancy et Maurice! And Reya, remember the saying, "Be careful what you want?" Enough said.

Reya Mellicker said...

Meri? Oh yeah.

NanU or Nancy or Science Girl is every bit as cool as you would expect. I didn't have a lot of time to spend with her due to the move, etc. Next time she's here, she's going to stay with me. She is smart, funny, warm, lovely. Just as you would expect.

So is Maurice! Though he's much smaller than I expected.

Thinking of you with squelchy rain on a moving day. That must have been some shake with the rain stick! At least the hot weather will help to dry things out. Biting cold with blustery winter rain here in South Australia at the moment. Maybe I should do a dance around the sun dial! Wishing you happiness in your new home!

Shaking your stick at the clouds, shouting at them? Ha! I can just imagine them laughing, putting their heads together in a huddle and saying, "Look at this one! C'mon, guys, we'll show HER who's boss!"

It's only water, so your furniture should be fine. I'm glad you had a sense of humor about it and the move is progressing! woohoo! Reye is MOVING! Look out, Universe!

Rice absorbs tons of water and those wet shop vacs work great. Steam cleaners can be rented from grocery stores. Love from the wet basement Midwest

I went to a Tonga rain Ceremony at a sacred pool in the rocks once when we lived on a farm in southern Zambia and the commercial farmers were desperate for rain...long story but the singanga was dressed in black and lots of things were done including the sacrifice of a black chicken and rain noises (clapping etc and black beads thrown on the water)- Me and Tam and Miranda were the only europeans there - all the farmers thought it hocus pocus but BOY did it POUR down that night... POURED. So yes, careful what you wish for Mighty Reya!!

Yikes! Well, hopefully it will dry out pretty quickly. I'm glad some rain finally fell. New Jersey was dry as a bone when we left -- maybe they got rain too. (Florida, by contrast, is nice and green and lush.)

Rain is what keeps us alive. Gotta love it, even when we get drenched.
