Go Forward With Courage
When you are in doubt, be still, and wait;
when doubt no longer exists for you, then go forward with courage.
So long as mists envelop you, be still;
When you are in doubt, be still, and wait;
when doubt no longer exists for you, then go forward with courage.
So long as mists envelop you, be still;
be still until the sunlight pours through and dispels the mists
-- as it surely will.
-- as it surely will.
Then act with courage.

Once again I'm struck by how different cultural sages counsel similar things. "Be still" is certainly a Zen commandment!
Shades of Walker Evans on the subway. People's guard are down and they reveal their real faces.
Oh god Reya - your photo and quote really hit home. When husband and I left our daughter after a visit to Germany, it was easier to catch the subway to the airport. I sat so still,after waving her goodbye and needed to much courage as the train tore me further and further away. In that still, courageous place, a stranger handed me a little travel pack of tissues.The kindness of strangers eh? (Being her age and stage in life, I think she dealt with it all with a strong dose of retail therapy!!)
Be still, and be going is another phrase I gathered years ago. Thinking of the mugginess of being on the Metro at this time of year makes me appreciate how lucky I am to live where I am, though I am still longing for cooler weather.
What a beautiful story, Pam.
The subway is far nicer than being outdoors right now. Harumph
What a tremendously wise and beautiful quote.
